Fragmented knowledge held in social groups which are isolated from each other or antagonistic to each other, are ineffectual in addressing the complex problems of a highly interconnected world.
In the absence of effective ways of integrating and harmonizing understanding we can expect the continuation, at best, of specialized fragmented solutions that cannot last. Imposed solutions provoke unintended consequences or simply compound the original problem situation.
Patrick Geddes, a Scottish polymath, botanist and town planner, advocated three conditions necessary to counteract these deficiencies:
Sympathy
– stepping out of isolation, listening and appreciating
Synergy
– seeing the situation as a whole and the potential coherence of mutual relationship
Synthesis
– coupling the necessary components in ways that realize the best potential
These three principles and the actions they guide increase the integration of effectual knowledge together with the practice through which implementation can take place.
